EmPowered Athletes Serving Others (EPASO) is a multi-faceted initiative that is run under the supervision of the Director of Recreation, Intramurals and Intercollegiate Athletics. The program encompasses civic engagement, academic development and co-curricular projects for our student-athletes. EPASO serves as a major instrument in the enhancement of the academic experience at Brooklyn College. This support system will help lead our student-athletes to receive more honors such as those conferred on our recent Rhodes Scholar, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars, CUNYAC Scholar Athletes and Brooklyn College Scholar Athletes. Retention of our student-athletes is another goal of the program.
EPASO Sponsors Stress Workshop Featuring Guest Speaker Jordan Friedman
The Office of Recreation, Intramurals and Intercollegiate Athletics will bring Jordan Friedman, a renowned stress-management expert and his “Weapons of Stress Reduction” seminar to Brooklyn College on February 28. The workshop, which is a part of the EPASO (EmPowered Athletes Serving Others ) program, will take place at 1:30 pm in the Jefferson Williams Lounge on the fourth floor of the Brooklyn College Student Center. Lunch will be provided to all guests.
Friedman’s 20-plus years of implementing and teaching stress prevention strategies on campuses around the nation, his motivating stress-to-success story, and web resources that support the ongoing use of tools demonstrated during the program are sure to make his visit to Brooklyn College both memorable and productive.
“Weapons of Stress Reduction” rolls out and test fires long-term strategies that prevent students with expected and manageable stressors from crossing the bridge to bad grades, unhealthy choices, physical ailments and emotional crises. Key stress prevention and preparedness strategies that are critical for top performance, career advancement and optimal health will be discussed and encouraged. In addition, each student receives a personal stress monitor to watch their stress management progress in real time during and after the session.
Friedman knows something about stress. He survived the largest brain tumor on record, years of extreme vision loss, and disabling denial, to become a public health expert in stress management education. His unique and inspiring experiences motivate his audiences to deal productively with challenge, change and crisis. As longtime director of Columbia University’s health education program, Friedman has penned hundreds of Internet and newspaper columns on everything from muscular relaxation to bedtime communication, and co-authored the popular Go Ask Alice Book Of Answers.
