Rich Micallef was named Head Men's Basketball Coach at Brooklyn College in June 2014.
Since being hired, the Bulldogs have achieved immediate success beginning with back-to-back 20-plus win seasons and a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2016 following the program's first CUNYAC Championship in six years. He would be named the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association's Division III Coach of the Year after the 2015-16 postseason run. The program would also receive the Schoenfeld Sportsmanship Award presented by the Collegiate Basketball Officials Association following the 2015-16 season.Â
In only his first season at the helm of the program, Coach Micallef directed the Bulldogs to a 23-7 record and a CUNYAC title game appearance. BC would earn the top seed in the ECAC Metro-Upstate Championships, advancing to the semifinal game. Â
Coach Micallef has coached four CUNYAC First Team All-Stars and a pair of Second Team CUNYAC All-Stars since the 2014-15 season. Following the 2015-16 season, Brooklyn College All-Time leading scorer, Egzon Gjonbalaj, would go on to earn a number of honors including NABC All-District First Team, D3Hoops All-Region First Team, and ECAC All-Metro First Team accolades.Â
No stranger to BC Athletics, Micallef spent four seasons on the Men's Basketball team from 1980-1984 and graduating as Brooklyn's all-time leading scorer with 1,740 career points, a record that stood until 2010. Over his four-year career, Micallef was a multiple BC Athlete of the Year recipient and team MVP, as well as earning New York State Division III Basketball All-State Team and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Metropolitan NY-NJ All-Star Team honors. For his efforts, Micallef would eventually have his #24 jersey retired and also be inducted into the BC Athletics Hall of Fame.
Following a long and successful career in the private sector, Micallef returned to basketball as a head coach in 2003 and most recently served as head coach at Fair Lawn High School. While at Fair Lawn, Micallef took the reins of a struggling program and eventually rebuilt the team into a contender in the region, making the Bergen County Jamboree Tournament this past season for the first time in eight years. He also led his team to the state tournament that included a quarterfinals appearance, which had not been done in over a decade. Micallef was named the Bergen County Coaches Association (BCCA) Coach of the Year in 2014.
Micallef entered the coaching field after his illustrious playing career that included guiding Brooklyn to an NCAA Division III Final Four appearance, which led to BC moving up to Division I, serving as a full-time assistant coach and later a part-time volunteer assistant coach at BC.
Micallef, a graduate of Xaverian High School and member of its Athletic Hall of Fame, earned his BS in Physical Education from BC in 1985.
