Alex Lang joined Brooklyn College Recreation, Intramurals and Athletics in 2002, when he was named Head Women's Basketball Coach and Assistant Director at the age of 24. During his time at Brooklyn, Lang has been vital to the program's growth, moving into the new West Quad Center, changing the mascot the the Bulldogs and instilling a championship culture, as the Bulldogs have combined for 16 CUNYAC and ECAC Titles, including 10 in the sports of Men's and Women's Basketball. Lang, who was promoted to Associate Director in 2013 and served as Acting Director during a transitional period, has had a huge role in the office's strategic planning and the progress made over the past two decades. Student-athletes, coaches and alumni identify Lang as the heart and soul of Brooklyn College Athletics and the go-to person to get tasks accomplished.
While serving as Acting Director during a transitional period, Lang led the Bulldogs return to Athletics after a one-year break from due to the COVID pandemic. Lang was able to hire head coaches for seven of the Bulldogs fourteen programs in 2022. In addition, Brooklyn College Recreation, which was closed for more than two full years, opened in the summer of 2022 and returned to full programming in fall of 2022. In addition, Lang was able to add two fulltime staffers to the office, while also bringing back the BC Cheerleading team. Additionally, Lang brought in a part-time Leadership coach and was instrumental in gaining a large percentage of facility rental revenue for athletics.
As Head Women's Basketball Coach, Lang's accomplishments have been second to none in New York City college basketball. Lang's 340 wins are the most ever by a CUNY Athletic Conference women's basketball coach. In that time, Lang's teams won four CUNYAC Championships, made four NCAA Tournament appearances, won two ECAC Championships, won eight CUNYAC regular season championships and won a first round NCAA Tournament Game for the first time in Brooklyn College Women's Basketball history. Lang's 2011-12 team won 20 games for the first time in program history, and then the team proceeded to win over 20 games for the 10 consecutive seasons. Lang was awarded CUNYAC Coach of the Year 8 times, while earning the Metropolitan Sportswriters Division III Coach of the Year in 2018 and the ECAC Coach of the Year in 2023.
Under Lang, the women’s basketball team has made huge strides since he inherited the program in 2002, when he took over an 0-26 squad. From 2008-2023, the team posted a record of 292-109, while setting many firsts in Brooklyn history. In 2018, the team made its first NCAA Tournament appearance and took home the school's first CUNYAC Championship since 1980. The 2017-2018 squad also matched a program-high of 24 wins, set by the Lang-led 2012-13 squad. The team followed that title up with championships in 2020, 2022 and 2023. In 2022, the team had one of its best firsts, winning the first NCAA Tournament Game in program history, a 70-57 win over 26-1 Emmanuel. The team's first-ever ECAC Tournament bid was in 2009, and since that season, the team has made the postseason (ECAC or NCAA), in every year since. The Bulldogs in fact won ECAC titles in 2015 and 2016. Lang also led the squad to Regular Season CUNYAC Championships in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2017, 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2023. Additionally, the team has made it to the CUNYAC Championship game ten times.
The success of the women's basketball program under Lang can be seen in the improvement of the level of returning players and recruits as well as the dedication of the assistants, team managers, alumni and fans. Lang has helped to build a confidence in his team and excitement in the gymnasium that did not exist previously.
Lang also served as Head Women's Cross Country Coach from 2007-2012. Under his leadership, the team won the CUNYAC title in 2008, the first in the women's cross country program's history. For the team's accomplishments, Lang was named CUNYAC "Coach of the Year". In 2011, the team finished in third place at the championships with a young squad, helping Lang once again to the conference's coach of the year honor.
Previous to his time at Brooklyn, Lang served as an assistant coach with the women's basketball team at CCNY. During his time with the team, Lang helped to recruit a variety of conference all-stars. In addition, he worked individually with the team’s guards, working vigorously with the CUNYAC’s all-time leading scorer Lauren Cargill.
In his prior role as Sports Information Director, Lang helped increased the visibility of Brooklyn College Athletics, resulting in a larger numbers of students trying out for teams as well as increased attendance at home games and athletics sponsored events. Lang maximized school and local media’s interest in Brooklyn College Athletics, landing increased publicity for many of the teams and athletes. ,His work has helped to land full-page spreads in the Daily News, Amsterdam News, New York City Sporting News, Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Park Slope Courier, Bay News and New York Sports Day. The Bulldogs have become regulars on News 12 Brooklyn, while landing a television spot on the nationally televised “NCAA on Campus” program that is shown on Fox Sports Net.
Lang is a member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and currently serves on the NCAA Women's Basketball Rules Committee.
He began his coaching career when he was in high school when he helped his father, Robert Lang, coach a boy’s junior high school team, Northview Tech, in East Harlem.
A Bronx native, Lang graduated from Albany State with a B.A. in English Literature and earned a M.S. in Sports Management from Brooklyn College. Lang currently lives in Franklin Square, NY with his wife Judy and two sons, Russell and Maxwell.
