Brooklyn, NY---Brooklyn College Athletics has named William Dumont head softball coach. Dumont, a longtime high school coach, has most recently been at the helm of one of the top high school softball programs in New York City at James Madison. Dumont will be replacing Peter Grillo, who resigned in May after two seasons at the helm. “I am looking forward to working at Brooklyn College and building a successful program,” said Dumont about his new position. “This is something I have always dreamed of.”
Dumont brings a wealth of experience and success at the high school level, serving as James Madison’s Varsity Softball Coach for the past 17 seasons while amassing over 600 career wins. Dumont reached the 600-win milestone during the 2009 season in which he led a team with no seniors to the Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL) “A” Championship Game, marking the third time that his team reached the finals (2001, 2007). He also guided his squad to the City Semifinals a remarkable 7 times.
In 2000, Dumont was named Softball Coach of the Year by both the New York “Daily News” and “New York Newsday”. While at Madison, he supervised the Summer Big Apple Games from 2004-2007, teaching over 100 athletes per day the game of softball. He was also a lead clinician for the PSAL Senior and Junior Fall Softball Showcase from 2006-2007. Before coaching the Varsity squad, Dumont began coaching softball as James Madison’s Junior Varsity coach from 1986-1993.
Director of Athletics Bruce Filosa was thrilled to announce the hiring, stating, “We are all very excited to have Bill Dumont at Brooklyn College coaching our softball team. He comes to us with lots of experience and success at the high school level and with the respect of many in the Public Schools Athletic League.”
His softball coaching aside, Dumont has served in many other capacities at James Madison, including teaching Advanced Placement and Honors Science classes, managing the Bio-Med Academy and acting as Dean of Students, throughout his 25 years at the Brooklyn based school. In 1999, he was chosen as the New York Times Teacher of the Year, rewarding his dedication.
He has also coached other teams at Madison, including Boy’s Varsity Soccer, Girl’s Varsity Basketball and Boy’s Junior Varsity Basketball. He helped the Boy’s Soccer Team to two PSAL semifinals appearances in 1998 and 1999. While the Girl’s Basketball Coach, he led the squad to 9 playoff appearances, and coached players such as Frances Lyons and former Brooklyn College standout Jaclyn Cavalcante.
Dumont earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry from New York University and holds Master’s Degrees from Brooklyn College (Chemistry Education) and Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus (Educational Administration). He resides in Wantagh, New York.
