Bronx, NY---The Brooklyn College Women's Cross Country Team got their first taste of competitive running since they won the CUNYAC Championship last October and were impressive once again as they finished 2nd out of 12 teams on Sunday at the Baruch College Invitational.
Brooklyn (83 points) was edged out by the host Baruch (72 points) and finished just ahead of third place York (88 points) in what turned out to be a three-team race. Hunter College, who had two runners in the top five, finished fourth with 101 points, while FDU-Florham finished fifth with a score of 128.
"We gave a great effort today in our first meet of 2009," said Head Coach Alex Lang. "We have only been training for just over two weeks and so I am extremely pleased with the effort, especially with our first-year runners who got their first look at the Van Cortlandt Course."
One of those rookies is Daisy Bugarin (Mountain View / Los Angeles, CA ), who led the way for Brooklyn, finishing 6th overall with a time of 29:14 in the 6K race. Sophomore Joanne Mundo (Fort Hamilton / Brooklyn, NY), the CUNYAC's reigning Rookie of the Year, also earned a medal as she finished in 10th place with a time of 30:16.
Khrystyna Uhlitskykh (Laguardia / Brooklyn, NY), Elizabeth Messina (Laguardia / Brooklyn, NY) and Julie Davolos (Philadelphia CC / New York, NY) were the team's 3rd, 4th and 5th finishers, rounding out the scoring for BC. Uhlitskykh finished 20th overall with a time of 32:32. Messina and Davolos finished consecutively, 28th and 29th overall, with times of 33:06 and 33:18. Messina was impressive as she was running in her first career race.
Sophomore Leah Wimpfheimer (Brien McMahon / Norwalk, CT) finished 37th overall with a time of 34:25.
Freshman Jawaria Amir (Edward R. Murrow / Brooklyn, NY) was also impressive in her first race, finishing 46th with a time of 34:55.
