Brooklyn, NY – Richard Jean-Baptiste (St. John’s Prep / Queens, NY) has scored 1,614 points in his career at Brooklyn College. This leaves him just 126 points shy of tying the school’s scoring record of 1,740 points, held by Rich Micallef (1980-1984).
Jean-Baptiste has received many accolades in his time playing for the Brooklyn College Bulldogs men’s basketball team. He has been named the CUNY Athletic Conference Player of the Year, named to D3Hoops.com Atlantic Region First-Team, National Association of Basketball Coaches All-American, has been a D3Hoops.com All-American, and an ECAC Metro Player of the Year. While these awards are given for outstanding play, they represent just one season. Achieving Brooklyn College’s men’s basketball scoring title would put an exclamation point on his stellar career.
But, Jean-Baptiste doesn’t play to just achieve his personal goals, he puts the team first. "Richard deserves to be in a class by himself, as this record would attest to, for no one has ever been more valuable and instrumental to his team's success than Richard Jean- Baptiste,” said head coach Steve Podias. “The points he scored are only part of his greatness, it's whatever the team needed to be champions that he cared most about."
This season, Jean-Baptiste is averaging 19.4 points a game. If that average holds up, he will break the record at some point in the game against the College of Staten Island on February 10, 2010.
Current men’s basketball team assistant coach and Richard’s older brother, Jeffrey Jean-Baptiste, is fourth on the all-time scoring list with 1,482 career points.
The Bulldogs are currently 11-5 overall and 6-1 in the CUNYAC.
