Men’s Basketball Cruises Past NYU-Poly in Season Opener, 70-36

Box Score

Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team opened the 2010-2011 season in an impressive fashion, as the Bulldogs downed the Fighting Blue Jays of NYU-Polytechnic University by a score of 70-36. Brooklyn moves to 1-0 on the season, while NYU-Poly drops to 0-2 on the young season.

The Bulldogs came out of the gate on fire scoring the first six points of the ballgame and never looked back as Brooklyn would take a 22-8 lead halfway through the first half. The Bulldogs would eventually head into the break up by 23 points with a 40-17 advantage. Brooklyn's stingy defense helped steer the way for the Bulldog's season opening win, holding the Blue Jays to 29.6% (16-for-54) shooting from the field, including going 1-for-18 from beyond the arc.

Seniors Darnell Cudjoe (Brooklyn, NY/Murray Bergtraum) and Ahmad Hemingway (Brooklyn, NY/Curtis) led by example, as each player posted a double-double on the night. Cudjoe finished the night with 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, to go along with four blocks; while Hemingway recorded 10 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Steven Grant (Brooklyn, NY/Nazareth) nearly missed a double-double of his own, chipping in with nine points and 10 rebounds. Junior Amil John (Brooklyn, NY/South Shore) helped spark the scoring early on finishing with 12 points, five steals and three assists, while classmate Tyshawn Russell (Jamaica, NY/Holy Cross) dropped eight points.

Senior Anthony Mottola (Brooklyn, NY/St. Edmund Prep) led all scorers with a game-high 18 points, while also recording nine rebounds for NYU-Poly. Classmate Jason Buckner (Littleton, CO/Dakota Ridge) finished the night with seven points and seven rebounds.

Brooklyn returns to action this weekend as the Bulldogs will participate in the Marymount University-Marine Corps Tip-Off Tournament in Arlington, VA.
