Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Office of Recreation, Intramurals and Intercollegiate Athletics held its Sixteenth (16th) Annual Student-Athlete Awards Ceremony this past Thursday, May 13th. The ceremony, which was held in the Gold Room of the Brooklyn College Student Center, honors the accomplishments of BC student-athletes throughout the season, both on the field and in the classroom.

The day began with a welcome and introduction from Bruce Filosa, Director of Recreation, Intramurals and Intercollegiate Athletics, before turning the ceremony over to Steve Podias, head coach for men’s basketball/men’s cross country, who served as master of ceremonies.

Before the student-athletes were recognized with their awards, Coach Podias presented two special guests, President Dr. Karen L. Gould and Professor Charles Tobey, Physical Education and Exercise Science Department Chairperson. President Gould and Professor Tobey both gave speeches to the audience, particularly to the senior student-athletes who have concluded their collegiate athletic career. President Gould and Professor Tobey were also presented with gifts in honor of their support of the BC Athletics Department.

In total, 140 student-athletes were honored during the ceremony, including 45 student-athletes who were presented with Brooklyn College Scholar Athlete certificates; while 32 of those BC Scholar Athletes were also presented with CUNYAC Scholar Athlete certificates. Executive Director of the CUNY Athletic Conference, Zak Ivkovic, was on hand to present those scholar athlete certificates, as well as conference all-star awards.

Ivkovic presented 13 BC student-athletes with their CUNYAC All-Star certificates, as well as CUNYAC Rookie of the Year Awards to Amalea Sideris (Women’s Tennis) and Daisy Bugarin (Women’s Cross Country).

Filosa on the awards ceremony: “It was a great day for everyone. We had an outstanding year, both athletically and academically, and the event was a great culmination of those achievements. Our student-athletes are special people and their year ended with a special day.”
