Endicott, NY --- Brooklyn College Men's Basketball Head Coach
Steve Podias has been named the New Balance – Basketball Coaches Association of New York, Men's College Division – Downstate Co-Coach of the Year.
Podias, who has guided the Brooklyn College Men's Basketball program for the last 16 years, led the Bulldogs to a 22-7 overall record en route to winning the team's second straight City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) / Con Edison Championship. Also, for the second straight year, the team earned a bid into the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship Tournament. The 2009-2010 season marked the third year in the row that the team won at least 20 games in a season, with an overall record of 66-20 in that span.
As head coach, Podias has been instrumental in the development of three time All-American and Brooklyn College career scoring leader
Richard Jean-Baptiste, 1,000 point scorer
Daniel Nisbett, 1,000 point scorer and former CUNYAC Rookie of the Year
Thomas Guerin, and former CUNYAC All-Star
Jeffrey Jean-Baptiste (2002-2006).
Podias, who will receive his award at the 29th Annual BCANY Fall Clinic in Albany, NY on September 24th and 25th, serves as a men's college representative for the Association.
Coach Bernard Tomlin of SUNY Old Westbury is the fellow Co-Coach of the Year with Podias.
The Basketball Coaches Association of New York, Inc. exists to promote the sport of basketball statewide at all levels. Further it seeks to improve the quality of coaching, foster friendship and statewide interaction among basketball coaches. The BCANY Board of Directors consists of Boys & Girls high school coaches from each NYSPHSAA (New York State Public High School Athletic Association) section, NYC Public, Private and Catholic schools. Also, Men's and Women's coaches at the Division I, II-III and Junior College levels. In addition it is planned to have a Boys Coach representative and Girls Coach representative from every scholastic league in the state.
