Flushing, NY --- For the second straight season, sophomore
Yuliya Orkis has been named the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC)/Hospital for Special Surgery Women's Tennis Player of the Year; while
Ahmad Odetalla took his second straight Coach of the Year award. Senior
Maria Sanz and junior
Gianna Gelosi were also selected to the All-Star Second Team again.
Orkis, the 2011 CUNYAC Player of the Year, was once again the top player in the CUNYAC in 2012, posting a perfect 12-0 record at #1 singles, including a 7-0 mark in conference play. Coming in doubles play, Orkis was just as flawless, registering a 10-0 mark at #1 doubles, including a 6-0 record in the CUNYAC. Orkis had the most success partnering with junior
Liana Rivkin, as the duo posted a 6-0 (2-0 CUNYAC) record.
"I feel amazing and grateful to have received this award once more," said Orkis on her second straight CUNYAC Player of the Year selection. "I hope that this reflects my commitment and dedication to my team and that this will push my teammates to bump me out of this spot, come next season. I owe a lot of my success to my supportive coaches and teammates."
In her two seasons in Brooklyn, Orkis owns a 24-0 record at #1 singles and a 21-2 record at #1 doubles.
Sanz and Gelosi were once again named to the CUNYAC All-Star Second Team in 2012, after earning second team honors in 2011.
This season, Sanz posted an 8-4 mark in singles play, to go along with a 5-2 record in the CUNYAC. Sanz played at #1, #2, #3 and #4 singles this season, having the most success at #3 singles where she registered a 5-1 record. Coming in doubles play, Sanz put up an 8-5 record and a 5-2 record in the conference. Sanz had her most success at #2 doubles, where she owned an 8-2 record.
Gelosi posted a 7-2 record in singles play, including a 5-1 record in the conference. She had her most success at #6 singles, where she recorded a 5-1 mark on the year. Coming in doubles play, Gelosi went 6-3 and 4-1 in the CUNYAC. Gelosi and Sanz teamed up to post a 3-0 record at #2 doubles.
Sanz and Gelosi were also named to the CUNYAC All-Star Second Team in 2011.
Head Coach Odetalla, who just completed his fourth season at the helm of the BC Women's Tennis program, was once again named the CUNYAC Coach of the Year in 2012. Over the past two seasons, Coach Odetalla has guided his team to a 24-7 overall record, including a 15-1 record in the CUNYAC.
“Obviously, it's an honor to receive this award from the conference and the other coaches,” said Odetalla. “Coach Perez (Assistant Coach
Ruth Perez) and I work hard to instill hard work and dedication upon the team. It feels nice to be recognized for the work we put in.”
