Four Bulldogs Earn CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Honorable Mention

Flushing, NY --- At the 26th Annual Michael Steuerman Scholar-Athlete Awards Dinner, which was held on Wednesday Evening, May 16, at the campus of Queens College, four Brooklyn College senior student-athletes were honored as City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Scholar-Athlete of the Year Honorable Mention.

Seniors Duong Thai (Men's Volleyball), Catherine Chan (Women's Swimming & Diving), Keiran Halton (Men's Basketball & Men's Volleyball) and Lauren Plagainos (Women's Basketball) were all named 2012 CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Honorable Mention.

Thai was a two-year member of the BC Men's Volleyball program. This season, Thai played an instrumental role in helping lead the Bulldogs to an appearance in the semifinals round of the CUNYAC Men's Volleyball Championships. He totaled a team-best 177 kills on the season, to go along with a team-high 19 total blocks, while playing in all 78 sets on the year. Thai finished the season ranked 10th in the conference in kills-per-set. A Physical Education major, Thai boasts a 3.54 GPA.

Chan, a two-year member of the BC Women's Swimming & Diving team, played an instrumental role in helping to resurrect the program in 2010-2011. At the 2012 CUNYAC Swimming & Diving Championships, Chan was a member of the BC quartet that posted a fifth place finish in the 200-Year Medley Relay (2:14.93). She also recorded a top-10 finish in the 200-Yard Breaststroke, with a time of 3:23.65, good for ninth place. Chan sports a 3.918 GPA as Biology major with minors in Anthropology and Archaeology. Chan is a member of the BA-MD program, the Macaulay Honors College, the BC AMSA Club and the BA-MD Club. Chan was recently named a Top-10 female finalist for the 2012 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award, as well as receiving the Jonas E. Salk Scholarship. She will enroll at SUNY Downstate College of Medicine in the Fall of 2012.

Halton was a two-year member of both the BC Men's Basketball and Men's Volleyball teams, while registering a 3.85 GPA as an Exercise Science major. This season on the basketball court, Halton played in all 29 games, while making 28 starts, averaging 6.9 ppg and 4.7 rpg. He also helped lead Brooklyn to the championship game of the 2012 ECAC Men's Basketball Tournament. Switching over to the volleyball court, Halton racked up an impressive 83 kills in just 27 sets played to average 3.07 kills-per-set. He also played a vital role in helping to lead the Bulldogs to the semifinals round of the CUNYAC Men's Volleyball Championships, were he was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Plagainos was two-year member of the BC Women's Basketball team, being named to the 2011-2012 CUNYAC All-Star First Team. This season, the Staten Island, NY native averaged a team-high 12.3 ppg, leading the team to a 22-8 overall record (first 20-win season in school history), including a perfect 11-0 CUNYAC record to claim the #1 seed in the conference tournament. The team also made its fourth straight appearance in the ECAC Tournament. She ranked 23rd in all of Division III in three-point field goals per game and 52nd in three-point field goal percentage. She ranked first in the CUNYAC in three-point field goals made. Plagainos is a Children and Youth Studies major with a 3.5 GPA and was named the February 2012 CUNYAC/HSS Scholar-Athlete of the Month.
