Women’s Tennis Defeats #7 John Jay in CUNYAC Quarterfinals

Brooklyn, NY --- The #2 seeded Brooklyn College Women's Tennis team defeated the #7 seeded Bloodhounds of John Jay College of Criminal Justice by a score of 5-1 in the quarterfinals round of the 2013 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC)/Hospital For Special Surgery (HSS) Women's Tennis Championships on Sunday afternoon at the Roosevelt Courts on the BC campus.

With the win, BC improves to 11-2 overall on the season to advances to the semifinals round for the third straight season and fourth appearance in five years. John Jay finishes the year with a 4-13 overall record.

Brooklyn took an early 2-1 advantage by taking wins at #1 and #3 doubles. The team of junior Ekaterina Mospanova and senior Maria Sanz cruised to an 8-0 victory at #1 doubles, while the tandem of freshman Diana Beshta and senior Gianna Gelosi gutted out a tough 9-7 triumph at #3 doubles.

The John Jay pairing of Armine Kurkjian and Gabriela Baez took won #2 doubles with ease, 8-1.

Sophomore Sarah Bildirici was the first to finish her singles match, taking a 6-1, 6-3 win at #6 singles, while sophomore Suraya Maenhout was the next to finish off her opponent, 6-1, 6-1, to take the win at #2 singles, giving the Bulldogs a 4-1 advantage.

Needing just one more win, BC's Mospanova defeated her opponent at #1 singles, 6-2, 6-2, to send the Bulldogs to the semifinals round.

"We've got to give John Jay a ton of credit today for making us work hard for every point," said head coach Ahmad Odetalla. "I didn't think we played our absolute best, but playing a tough match like this one should help us prepare for the next round."

BC will take on either #3 Baruch College or #6 Lehman College in the semifinals round this Tuesday, October 22nd at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY.
