Four Bulldogs Named CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Honorable Mention

Flushing, NY --- Four Brooklyn College student athletes were recognized at the 27th Annual City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Michael Steuerman Scholar-Athlete Awards dinner, which was held on Thursday, May 16th at the Queens College Ballroom.

Seniors Jonathan Martinez (Men's Cross Country), James Marty (Men's Swimming & Diving), Kathy Chu (Women's Volleyball) and Maria Sanz (Women's Tennis) were all recognized for their hard work and excellence both in athletics and in the classroom.

Chu, a four-year member of the BC Women's Volleyball team, served as a tri-captain during her senior year and was named a 2012 CUNYAC Second Team All-Star. The CUNYAC Sportsmanship Award winner and CUNYAC All-Tournament team honoree in 2011 is an Exercise Science major with a 3.77 GPA. Off the court, Chu was a Grant Writer for the Brooklyn College Global Medical Brigades effort in Panama during June 2012. Chu has been a mainstay on the Dean's List and is a recipient of the Presidential Scholarship. She is a member of both the Coordinated BA-MD Program, as well as the Scholars Honors Program, and will be attending SUNY Downstate Medical School in the Fall 2013.

Martinez is a two-sport athlete at BC, spending four seasons on both the Men's Basketball and Men's Cross Country teams. As a member of the BC Men's Basketball team, Martinez was a key role player that helped the team capture back-to-back CUNYAC Championships (2009 & 2010). He was also on the team that registered a runner-up finish in the 2012 ECAC Metro Championships. On the BC Cross Country team, Martinez ran a personal best time of 35:47 at both the 2010 and 2012 CUNYAC Championships. Martinez, a member of the Dean's List, boasts a 3.38 GPA as a TV and Radio major.

Marty is a two-year member of the BC Men's Swimming & Diving team and was one of Brooklyn's top long distance swimmers in the 1,000 and 500-Yard Freestyle events, as well as the team's best swimmer in the Breaststroke event. At the 2013 CUNYAC Championships, Marty posted top-10 finishes in the 500-Yard Freestyle, the 400-Yard IM and the 200-Yard Breaststroke. Marty, a member of the Dean's List, boasts a 3.41 GPA as a Physical Education major. He is also a member of the Health and Nutrition Society of Brooklyn College and PE for NYC Campaign. Marty has also spent time as a volunteer swimming coach at The Boy's Club of New York.

Sanz is a three-year member and two-year captain of the BC Women's Tennis team that posted a 30-14 overall record, including a 19-5 mark in the CUNYAC since 2010. Sanz was a key member of the 2011 team that posted a perfect 8-0 mark in the CUNYAC to capture the regular season championship and a runner-up finish in the conference championships. Sanz is a two-time CUNYAC Second Team All-Star (2011 & 2012), while posting a career record of 24-16 in singles play and 28-14 in doubles play. A Psychology major with a minor in Health, Sanz boasts a 3.52 GPA and is a member of the Dean's List.
