Flushing, NY --- Brooklyn College senior
Bennett Collier has been named the recipient of the 2014-2015 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Women's Swimming & Diving Sportsmanship Award, as voted on by the conference coaches and Sports Information Directors.
Collier, a two-year member of the BC Women's Swimming team, came to Brooklyn after transferring from NCAA Division I Saint Mary's College in Moraga, California, where she was a two-year member of the Gaels' Women's Rowing team.
"I honestly was at a loss for words," said Collier when notified she had been named the CUNYAC Sportsmanship Award winner. "I couldn't believe it. Our team has kind of been the underdog, but is slowly coming out of it's little underdog cave right now and it was really cool to be such a strong part of that team. To have an award that's not only for college, but for all of CUNYAC and finishing the year off with this award was excellent."
Named a team co-captain this season, the Los Angeles, CA native posted an 8th place finish in the 100-Yard Butterfly with a time of 1:23.75 at the 2014-2015 CUNYAC Championships that were held at Lehman College on February 6th-8th. She also finished the 100-Yard Backstroke in a time of 1:22.79, good for 14th place.
In the relay events at the conference championships, Collier swam the first leg (backstroke) of the 400-Yard Medley Relay, as BC finished in a time of 5:16.93, good for ninth place. She was also a member of the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay team, swimming the second leg, as the Bulldogs placed ninth with a time of 1:58.79. In her final relay, the 800-Yard Freestyle Relay, Collier swam the final leg, as Brooklyn posted a time of 10:28.58, good for eighth place.
Head Coach
Antonio Gaspar on Collier: "Bennett is a dedicated teammate and is always pushing her fellow swimmers to get better and improve on their individual times. She's an all-around good student and athlete."
