EmPowered Athletes Serving Others (EPASO)

EmPowered Athletes Serving Others (EPASO) is a multi-faceted initiative that is run under the supervision of the Director of Recreation, Intramurals and Intercollegiate Athletics. The program encompasses civic engagement, academic development and co-curricular projects for our student-athletes. EPASO serves as a major instrument in the enhancement of the academic experience at Brooklyn College. This support system will help lead our student-athletes to receive more honors such as those conferred on our recent Rhodes Scholar, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars, CUNYAC Scholar Athletes and Brooklyn College Scholar Athletes. Retention of our student-athletes is another goal of the program.

EPASO Holds Magner Center Orientation Workshop
Brooklyn College EPASO (EmPowered Athletes Serving Others) held a workshop in conjunction with the Brooklyn College Magner Center on Wednesday, August 25, introducing student-athletes to the resources that the center has to offer.  The Magner Center is the Career and Internship Center at the College and provides skill training in many areas desirable to employers, while also linking current students with employers as well as alumni who are in the same field.

The workshop was broken down into two one-hour sessions as the student-athletes were met by Zavi Baynes and Natalia Guarin-Klein on behalf of the Magner Center.  Each speaker captivated and informed the student-athletes on the benefits of experience in their desired field of work and encouraged all to take advantage of the Magner Center's resources.

Both sessions were well attended and feedback from the studen-athletes was overwhelmingly positive.
Jillian Escobar (Francis Lewis / Queens Village, NY), a freshman on the womens' volleyball team, was impressed with the event, stating, "This workshop opens the eyes of students to the resources available at Brooklyn College."

EPASO and the Magner Center will team up once more in January for another orientation for student-athletes that will be aimed toward winter and spring sports.

EPASO Enters Fourth Year At Brooklyn College
The 2010-2011 academic year marks the fourth year of the EPASO program at Brooklyn College.  Under the leadership of coordinator Alex Lang, EPASO will look to continue its work of the previous three years.    The successful peer mentoring and tutoring programs will continue as well as some innovative co-curricular events involving the program's student-athletes.

First Ever Pep Rally A Success!
On December 1st, 2009, EPASO sponsored the first-ever Brooklyn College Athletics Pep Rally in front of our new home the West Quad Center.  The days events were plentiful but none as dramatic as when President Gould revealed the new Team Name & Mascot....the BULLDOGS!!  Most of the excitment and school spirit was directed toward the first home basketball doubleheader in the West Quad that evening as the men's and women's basketball teams were preparing to take on York College. Introductions of the full rosters of each team, as well as a performance and introductions of the cheerleading squad got things going.  Each of Brooklyn College's teams were well represented and they each were recognized as well.  MC Joe Tribuzio then got the crowd into the action as he introduced some contests such as dance-offs and music trivia that were very well received and resulted in giveaways for all, including New Jersey Nets basketball tickets.  Fun was had by all who attended and school spirit was in the air and mostly heard with the two words:
GO BULLDOGS!:
