Stanley Purcell Named Brooklyn College Male Student-Athlete of the Month for April
Junior Stanley Purcell played a key role in helping to lead the Brooklyn College Men’s Tennis team to its best finish in City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNAYC) play since 2008. BC hosted a quarterfinals match for the first time since 2008 and advanced to the semifinals round for the first time since 2007.
The 2014 season saw the Bulldogs improve by five games, as the team finished with a 5-2 league record after posting a 0-7 record in 2013.
Purcell, a transfer from Medgar Evers College, made an immediate impact to the BC Men’s Tennis program in his first season of collegiate tennis, posting a 5-2 singles record, including a perfect 4-0 mark in CUNYAC play.
Purcell split time between #2 singles (3-1) and #3 singles (2-1).
In doubles play, Purcell posted an even 4-4 record, including a 2-2 mark in the CUNYAC. He split time between #1 doubles (2-2) and #2 doubles (2-2).
Purcell played with classmate Charles Stevens for the most part, as the duo posted a 2-2 mark at #1 doubles, including a 2-1 record in conference play.
Purcell began the month with a five-match win streak, defeating CCNY’s Michael Arias (6-1, 6-3 at #3 singles), St. Joseph’s College’s (Brooklyn) James Hanophy (6-0, 6-0 at #2 singles), Lehman College’s Al Joseph Dubouzet (6-1, 6-1 at #2 singles), York College’s Hasnain Khatri (6-3, 6-2 at #2 singles) and CSI’s Austin Kapetanakis (6-4, 6-3 at #3 singles).
