The purpose of intercollegiate athletics at Brooklyn College is to provide opportunities for students who seek to reach their athletic potential while representing their college. The program is organized to allow students who wish to participate in intercollegiate athletics to try out for teams of their choice.
Academic performance is the most important priority for all student-athletes. Limits on length of season, number of contests, length of practices, and extent of travel reflect the commitment of all student-athletes to succeed academically. There are no revenue producing sports at Brooklyn College. Admission to games is free. Gender equity is a high priority. The college provides outstanding coaches, trainers, and medical doctors to all teams. Facilities and equipment are properly maintained and are kept safe and clean.
Winning and losing are only important as a product reflecting the process of teaching and learning. Winning is not a product that stands by itself, and in this context does not necessarily determine the success of the program. Participation and the skills learned in the process are indicators of success.
Our intercollegiate athletics program is designed to enhance educational opportunities and extend awareness of self and others through sports. It gives high priority to promoting understanding, and, to this end, developing friendships and sportsmanship.
