Freshman Valentina Monroy (Brooklyn, NY/Edward R. Murrow) has made an immediate impact to the Brooklyn College Women’s Swimming & Diving team in its first season since being suspended following the 2003-2004 season.
For her efforts in the month of November, which saw her post 15 first place finishes, Monroy has been named the Brooklyn College Female Student Athlete of the Month.
On November 16th, BC’s 2010-2011 home opener against CUNY Athletic Conference foe Lehman College, Monroy took home a pair of individual first place finishes in the 200-Free (2:18.68) and the 100-Fly (1:14.50). She was also a member of the 200-Medley Relay team that finished in first with a time of 2:17.28.
Monroy continued to excel in the water as she helped lead the Bulldogs to their first win of the season on November 18th against CUNYAC rival York College. Monroy bested the field in the 200-Free (2:36.61) and the 100-Fly (1:24.41), and was once again a member of the winning 200-Medley Relay team as Brooklyn downed the Cardinals 108-72.
In a tri-meet against host Sarah Lawrence College and the College of Mount Saint Vincent on November 20th, Monroy finished first in the 200-IM (2:41.45), the 100-Fly (1:16.39) and the 200-Free (2:21.20).
The Brooklyn native continued to dominate in her events helping to lead BC to a 70-51 victory over borough rival Saint Joseph’s College (Brooklyn) on November 22nd, as Monroy once again took home first place finishes in the 200-IM (2:39.86), the 100-Fly (1:13.42) and the 200-Free (2:24.70). She was also on the winning 200-Medley Relay team.
Monroy would be rewarded for her efforts being named the CUNYAC Rookie of the Week, for the week ending November 22nd.
In Brooklyn’s final meet of the month on November 30th against Hunter College, Monroy took home a first place finish in the 100-Fly (1:12.06) and was a member of the quartet that won the 200-Medley Relay (2:12.33).
