Janice Shen Named Brooklyn College Female Student-Athlete of the Month – October
Senior Janice Shen was a vital component to the Brooklyn College Women’s Tennis team’s success during the month of October, as Brooklyn finished the month with a 9-1 overall record and a perfect 5-0 record in the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC).
BC would go on to clinch the #1 overall seed in the 2011 CUNYAC/Hospital for Special Surgery Women’s Tennis Championships. For Brooklyn, it would mark the first regular season women’s tennis championship in school history.
The Bulldogs would eventually fall in the championship final to Hunter College.
During the month, Shen posted a 7-1 record in singles play (5-0 in CUNYAC), playing the majority of the time at the #3 singles spot. She posted a 4-1 at #3 singles, a 2-0 record at #1 singles and a 1-0 record at #2 singles. Her only loss of the season would come in the conference championship final.
Along with her strong play in singles flights, Shen was just as solid in doubles partnering with sophomore Gianna Gelosi. The duo would go perfect in the month with a 7-0 record in doubles (4-0 in CUNYAC). The tandem posted a 4-0 record at #3 doubles, a 2-0 record at #1 doubles and a 1-0 record at #2 doubles.
Shen was also honored by the conference as a two-time CUNYAC Women’s Tennis Rookie of the Week selection (10/11 and 10/17).
A member of the Coordinated BA/MD Program with SUNY Downstate Medical Center and Macculay Honors College, Shen has also excelled off the tennis court and in the classroom, boasting a 3.89 GPA as a Chemistry major and French minor.
For her efforts during the month of October 2011, Janice Shen has been named the Brooklyn College Female Student-Athlete of the Month.
