Brooklyn College senior guard Tyshawn Russell, a four-year member of the BC Men’s Basketball program, had a stellar month of January, which saw the Bulldogs post an even 5-5 record.
Russell started in all 10 games played in January, averaging a team-leading 20.1 points per game, to go along with 4.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.6 steals per game. Russell also shot 39.9% (67-168) from the field and 72.5% (58-80) from the free throw line, while averaging 38.3 minutes per game.
Russell scored in double figures in all 10 games in the month, including posting six games of at least 20 points. He scored a month-high 31 points in a 93-73 win over conference rival John Jay College of Criminal Justice on January 25th.
Russell began the month reaching a historic milestone in his career, as he surpassed the 1,000-point plateau in BC’s 77-75 come-from-behind victory over CUNYAC South foe York College on January 4th. Russell would also hit the go-ahead bucket as time expired to give Brooklyn the win.
Russell became the 18th men’s basketball player in Brooklyn College history to score over 1,000 career points, joining current teammate Amil John and former teammates Richard Jean-Baptiste, Daniel Nisbett and Thomas Guerin.
With games played through January 29th, Russell ranks 18th in all of Division III in scoring and 21st in steals per game.
For his efforts, Russell has been named the Brooklyn College Male Student-Athlete of the Month, for the month of January.
