Women's Basketball Wins Second Straight, Downing Poly, 68-61

Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College Women's Basketball Team (2-2) came back from a first half deficit to defeat Polytechnic University (0-2), 68-61 on Tuesday Night, as they won their second straight at the Roosevelt Gymnasium. 

Polytechnic came out firing in the first half as Consuelo Aranda (Vincent Memorial/Calexico, CA) knocked down her third straight three-pointer at the midway point of the opening stanza to give the Fighting Blue Jays a 15 point edge, 24-9.   The tide then turned, as the Bridges forced five straight turnovers and exploded on a 19-6 run to close to within two points, 30-28 at the break.

The second half began with an Amber Gordon (Bishop Loughlin / Brooklyn, NY) basket that tied the contest at 30. Polytechnic's Kristin Partch (Susan Wagner / Staten Island, NY) then scored four straight points on a pair of free throws and a lay-up to give the visitors thier largest lead of the second half.  The teams traded baskets over the next several minutes until  Ashley Allen (William C. Bryant / Sunnyside, NY) drained a trifecta, her only basket of the game, that put the Bridges up by two with 11 minutes to play, 45-43.  They would never again trail.  By converting on their final ten free-throws over the last five minutes, Brooklyn sealed the win against their borough rival.

Senior guard Jaclyn Cavalcante (James Madison/Brooklyn, NY) led the way, scoring 17 points and dishing out 5 assists.  Christina McDonnell (Staten Island Tech / Staten Island, NY), Amalea Sideris (St. Demetrios / Astoria, NY), and Gordon each had 16 points in the win.  Joelle Laurenceau (Midwood / Brooklyn, NY) led the team with 11 rebounds, while dishing out 3 assists.

Up next for the women is a match-up against Rutgers Camden on Saturday, December 1st at 12:30 pm.  The game will be followed by a 3:00 men's game at the Roosevelt Gymnasium.
