Men's Basketball Win Streak Snapped At 6 Games

Box Score

Bronx, NY---The Brooklyn College Men (6-2, 2-0 CUNYAC) suffered their first defeat since opening night as they dropped a 70-68 decision to the hands of the host, SUNY Maritime (6-4).

The teams traded baskets in the early going, but Daniel Nisbett (Petrides / Staten Island, NY) scored nine straight points to build an early ten point lead for the Bridges.  A jumper by Corey McFarlane (Transit Tech / Brooklyn, NY) moments later stretched the advantage to 13 points, 22-9, with eight minutes to play in the opening stanza.  Tim Dougherty then scored seven of the next 10 points for Maritime, who closed the gap within four points in final two  minutes of the period.

The second half opened with Brooklyn increasing their lead to eight points on a Richard Jean-Baptiste (St. John's Prep / Queens, NY) jumper. Maritime would then respond by putting together a 10-2 rally, capped by a Jamaal Webb steal and lay-up, to pull to within two points, 40-38.  The home team would take a one point lead on another basket by Webb several minutes later.  That spurred the Bridges to again go on the offensive.  Five different players scored during a 10-0 run over the next two minutes.  BC led by nine points 58-49 with nine minutes remaining.

Maritime then clamped down on the defensive end, forcing seven turnovers and three missed field goals over the next seven minutes.  Taking advantage of the opportunity, Webb converted a three-pointer to tie the score at 61-61 with three mintes to play.  Tommy Guerin (St. Edmunnd Prep / Brooklyn, NY) sank two free throws to give BC a two point edge, but the next six points were scored by Maritime.  Jean-Baptiste converted a free throw and then a three-pointer to tie the game at 67-67, setting up an exciting final minute.  Each side was one of two from the charity stripe over the next 30 seconds.  Giovanni Hurley drove the lane and scored on a lay-up with just three ticks on the clock.  The Bridges had one final chance, but Daniel Nisbett's three-pointer failed to fall through the net.

Brooklyn was led by Nisbett's 23 points in defeat.  Jean-Baptiste added 16 points, while Guerin chipped in with 12 points and five assists.  Maritime was paced by Hurley's 16 points and Webb , who scored all 15 of his points in the second half.

Brooklyn will look forward to resuming conference play as they host City Tech on Thursday, January 3rd at 7:30 pm in the second half of a doubleheader.  The Bridges currently enjoy a 2-0 mark in league play, and sit atop the CUNYAC South Division.
