Jamaica, NY -- The Brooklyn College Men (5-1, 1-0) won their fifth straight game of the season, netting their first conference win on Tuesday night as they defeated York College (5-4, 0-1) 83-74.
Richard Jean-Baptiste (St. John's Prep / Queens, NY) converted a short jumper on the first possession for the Bridges, who never trailed. That spurred BC on a 22-8 rally to open the game. A Daniel Nesbitt (Michael J. Petrides / Staten Island) trifecta followed a York turnover at the 4-minute mark, stretching the lead to 24 points, 38-14. The Cardinals would score the next six points, but a pair of free throws by Jean-Baptiste and another three-pointer by Nesbitt gave the Bridges a seemingly comfortable halftime cushion of 23 points, 43-20.
The Bridges continued the onslaught into the second half, as Nesbitt converted a three-point play nine minutes into the period giving Brooklyn a 26 point lead, 57-31. The Cardinals would not go quietly, embarking on a run of their own in which they scored 27 of the next 37 points, pulling to within nine points, 67-58 with just over five minutes to play. The Bridges lead would sway between nine and 13 points over the next three minutes. The Cardinals still had one last rally in them, scoring seven consecutive points to pull to within three with 90 seconds left to play. Forced to foul, York sent the Bridges to the charity stripe, where senior guard Corey McFarlane (Transit Tech / Brooklyn, NY) drained eight of ten attempts as the final seconds ticked away. Nesbitt added another field goal for good measure, allowing the Bridges to come away with the nine-point win.
Leading the way for the Bridges was Nisbett, who had a game-high 35 points and eight steals while playing all 40 minutes . Jean-Baptiste chipped in with 19 points and seven rebounds, while McFarlane netted 16, 12 from the free-throw line. McFarlane also led the squad with six assists. Freshman center Enes Purisic (William C. Bryant / Astoria, NY) contributed five steals, as the vaunted Bridges defense forced 32 Cardinal turnovers.
York was led by Chris Roberts (Springfield Gardens / Jamaica, NY) and Omari Phipps (St. John's Prep / Laurelton, NY) who both dropped 17 points. Marcelle Esonwue (Marist Brothers / Nigeria) had a double-double for the Cardinals, with 15 points and a game-high 13 caroms.
The Bridges will next play in the CUNYAC/Con Edison Game of the Week , hosting the College of Staten Island Dolphins Thursday Decemeber 6 at 7:30 pm.
