Jamaica, NY -- The Brooklyn College Women's Basketball team (2-4, 0-1 CUNY) dropped their first conference game of the season, falling at York (3-4, 1-0 CUNY) 65-53.
Senior guard Jaclyn Cavalcante (James Madison / Brooklyn, NY) converted two three-pointers in the game's opening minutes, helping the Bridges to an early 10-6 advantage. The Cardinals then erupted on an 11-1 run in which four different players scored, taking a 17-11 lead midway through the opening stanza. Another trey from Cavalcante, along with one from sophomore Christina McDonnell (Staten Island Tech / Staten Island, NY) brought BC to within two points at 19-17 with over seven minutes to play. York then rallied again, scoring 12 of the next 14 points, taking a 31-19 lead into the break.
The Cardinals scored the first four points of the second half, pushing the bulge to 16 points. Brooklyn answered with a 23-11 run over the next eight minutes, closing the gap to six points at 48-42. York's Maimouna Dabo (Lycee Du Notre Dame / Bamako, Mali) then hit consecutive three-pointers, followed by a triple from Delores Maeweather (Campus Magnet / Jamaica, NY), giving the Cardinals a 59-46 advantage with less than two minutes to play. The Cardinals were successful on six of their final eight free throws as they wrapped up their first conference win of the season.
Brooklyn was led by Cavalcante's 14 point, five assist performance. McDonnell chipped in with 13 points, while junior Amalea Sideris (St. Demetrios / Astoria, NY) had her first double-double of the season pulling down 16 boards to complement her 11 points. Joelle Laurenceau (Midwood / Brooklyn, NY) added 14 caroms in 35 minutes of action.
The Cardinals were paced by Dabo's 20 points and Maeweather's 14.
