Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College Women (2-5; 0-2 CUNYAC) jumped out to a 38-29 halftime lead but could not hold on as they dropped a 74-66 decision to the College of Staten Island (5-2; 2-0 CUNYAC).
Brooklyn opened the game on a 12-5 run, highlighted by three-pointers from senior Jaclyn Cavalcante (James Madison/Brooklyn, NY) and sophomore Christina McDonnell (Staten Island Tech/Staten Island, NY). Holding the Dolphins offense in check for most of the first half by forcing 16 turnovers, the Bridges enjoyed an 11-point edge twice in the opening stanza.
The second half began with Amalea Sideris (St. Demetrios / Brooklyn, NY) scoring six points in four minutes, stretching the BC lead to 13 points, 51-38. CSI called a timeout and returned to the court with a new defensive scheme that forced 11 Brooklyn turnovers in less than seven minutes. This propelled the Dolphins to a 19-1 run and allowed them to take a five-point lead, 57-52 midway through the second stanza.
The Bridges would fight back as an Ashley Allen (William C. Bryant / Sunnyside, NY) trifecta and a pair of free throws from McDonnell would tie the game. Another Sideris lay-up and a jumper by Amber Gordon (Bishop Loughlin / Brooklyn, NY) would put BC ahead by three, 61-58 with six minutes to play. Six straight points by junior Nicole Estrada (Bishop Kearney / Brooklyn, NY), including the basket that put CSI up for good, keyed a 16-8 Dolphin to finish the game.
Leading Brooklyn College was Cavalcante, who scored 17 points while converting all four of her attempts from 3-point range. McDonnell also notched 17 points while adding 6 steals. Sideris scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the loss. Estrada led the way for CSI with 20 points while Kristen Panareillo (St. Joseph by the Sea / Staten Island, NY) chipped in with 19.
Brooklyn will remain at home as they host the College of St. Elizabeth in a non-conference tilt on Saturday, December 8th at 1:00 pm.
