Staten Island Outlasts BC In Home Opener

Box Score

Brooklyn, NY---The BC Men (0-3, 0-1 CUNYAC) couldn't take control of a game that was tied, 2-2, at halftime as conference foe, Staten Island (1-4, 1-0 CUNYAC), went on to win a 6-2 decision.

The game was deadlocked at 2 after a back and forth first half in which each team scored consecutive goals.  The opening minutes of the second half seemed to be controlled by the Bridges as they were the more aggressive team and were continuously on the attack.  The turning point of the game however came in the 55th minute as BC's Ardit Cela (New Utrecht/Brooklyn, NY) and CSI's Anthony Rizzo (Susan Wagner/Staten Island, NY) became entangled on the far sideline.  Rizzo pushed Cela to the ground and there was some flared tensions between the teams.  As soon as the Referee restored control, he assessed Rizzo with a red card and Vasyl Palinchak (James Madison/Brookyn, NY) with a yellow card.  For Palinchak, it was his second yellow of the game and therefore each team had to play one man down for the remainder of the half.

The incident seemed to shift the momentum, and after Brooklyn's failure to convert on a couple of opportunities, Staten Island's Drew Surmanek (Monsignor Farrell/Staten Island, NY) delivered on two consecutive goals, giving the Dolphins a 4-2 lead.  In the coming moments Brooklyn tried to recover, but after Elis Llagami (FDR/Brooklyn, NY) fed Vasilios Mantagas (James Madison/Brooklyn, NY) beautifully on a breakaway could not be converted, and Staten Island got another goal from Leonardo Arganaraz (Curtis/Staten Island, NY), hope became dim.  Surmanek tacked on another goal in the games 85th minute, giving him the hat trick and sealing the victory.

The first half of play saw the scoring opened by CSI as they got goals from Jason Rebeiro (St. Peter's/Staten Island, NY) and Arganaraz.  BC stormed back as Michael Pelletier (Enrico Fermi/Enfield, CT) converted on a penalty kick for his first collegiate goal.  A few minutes later, Natraj Bhushan (Xaverian/Brooklyn, NY) made a great cross from the right corner as he found Llagami on the left side of the goal.  Llagami headed the ball in for his third goal of the season.

BC will host Baruch College on Saturday, September 15th at the College of Staten Island.  Gametime is 12:00 pm
