Women's Tennis Wins First Match, Edging John Jay 5-4

Brooklyn, NY---Brooklyn College (1-0, 1-0 CUNYAC) defeated John Jay College (1-3, 1-1 CUNYAC), 5-4, in a tightly contested match at the Roosevelt Courts on Monday night.

Brooklyn was down four matches to three with two matches yet to be completed.  Svetlana Khvatikova (Youth DARES/Brooklyn, NY), playing #4 singles, went on to defeat Pamela Moreno (A. Phillip Randolph/New York, NY) in a third set super tiebreaker, 12-10 after splitting the first two sets, 6-1, 5-7. 

The teams were now tied at four matches a piece as Katarzyna Steckiewicz (Jadwiga Borzecka/Brooklyn, NY) battled Stephanie Pierre (Clara Barton/Brooklyn, NY) in their #5 singles match.  Steckiwicz, already up one set (6-3), battled from behind to come back and win the second set, 6-4.

The match was a huge early season win for BC, as both Brooklyn and John Jay expect to be among the top half of the conference this season.

Also winnning singles matches for Brooklyn were Ruth Perez (EBC Bushwick/Brooklyn, NY) and Suzanna Sula (St. Saviour/Staten Island, NY), and getting the lone win in doubles were the #3 combination of Kvatikova and Steckiewicz. 

Perez, playing #2 singles, made quick work of Liz Cyran (Paramus Catholic/Wood Ridge, NJ), 6-4, 6-0.  Sula, playing #6 singles, blanked Anastasia Williams (Jamaica/Hollis, NY), 6-0, 6-0. 

Alina Binder (Yeshiva of Flatbush/Brooklyn, NY) lost her #1 singles match, falling to Daisy Rivera (Law, Government & Justice/Bronx, NY), 6-3, 7-5.  Joy Rotstein (Ezra Academy/Brooklyn, NY) also came up short at #3 singles, falling to Ariadna Di Fabrizio (Cobble Hill/Mendoza, Argentina), 6-1, 6-1.

Brooklyn will travel to the Bronx on Wednesday to take on conference foe Lehman College at 4 pm.
