Women's Basketball Can't Get Past Medgar Evers

Brooklyn, NY-- The Brooklyn College Women (5-13, 1-8 CUNYAC) were not able to hold off the Medgar Evers College Cougars (5-12, 3-6 CUNYAC) as they fell 71-59.

The Cougars opened the game on a 17-5 run over the first seven minutes and would not trail during the contest. Brooklyn would fight back to within five points at 21-16 when senior guard Jaclyn Cavalcante (James Madison / Brooklyn, NY) sank two fouls shots capping an 11-4 rally. The Bridges were then held scoreless over the next three minutes, as Medgar Evers had four different players score during a 10-0 spurt that increased the edge to 31-16.

The Bridges made it interesting in the second stanza, scoring the nine straight points to open the period. A Christina McDonnell (Staten Island Tech / Staten Island, NY) three-pointer cut the gap to six points, 39-33 just over two minutes into the half. Several minutes later, freshman guard Amber Gordon (Bishop Loughlin / Brooklyn, NY) converted a trifecta to bring BC to within five points at 42-37.

Over the next four minutes, the Cougars eruppted on a 10-0 run, increasing their lead to 15 points at 52-37. Brooklyn would follow that up with an 11-0 rally of their own, cutting the score to 52-48 with eight minutes to play. Back-to-back jumpers by Shauntelle Nelson and Danielle Moseley, combined with a Roshanna Hoppie free throw extended the Medgar Evers lead to nine points, at 59-50. The BC shooters went cold, as the Bridges misfired on nine of their last 11 attempts from the field, while the Cougars shot better than 55 percent (5 for 11) down the stretch.

Leading the way for the Bridges was Gordon, who had a team high 19 points and six steals. Cavalcante chipped in with 11 points and six steals of her own. Sophomore forward Joelle Laurenceau (Midwood / Brooklyn, NY) also had a solid night contributing 10 points with seven rebounds. McDonnell was the squad's leading rebounder, collecting eight caroms.

The Bridges come back to Roosevelt Gym to take on the York College Cardinals for a Saturday afternoon conference bout. Tip off is scheduled for 12:30 pm.
