Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College Women (5-14, 1-9 CUNYAC) came back from a six point deficit to take a second half lead, but could not hold on down the stretch as York (6-13, 4-5 CUNYAC) edged out a 79-71 decision on Saturday afternoon.
York opened the game scoring 11 of the first 15 points, as Maimouna Dabo (Lycee Notre Dame du Nigerled/Bamako, Mali) dropped five quick points. A three point play by Amalea Sideris (St. Demetrios / Astoria, NY) followed a Jaclyn Cavalcante (James Madison / Brooklyn, NY) three-pointer to pull the Bridges to within one point eight minutes into the period. The Cardinals countered with a 13-0 run, capped by a triple from Samantha Marsala (Longwood / Long Island, NY) to take their largest lead of the game, 24-10 with nine minutes remaining in the first half. York would maintain a ten-point lead for much of the first half. In the final 90 seconds of the stanza, Danielle Kramer (Bishop Ford / Brooklyn, NY) and Ashley Allen (William C. Bryant / Sunnyside, NY) combined to score eight consecutive points, bringing BC to within three points 38-35. Dabo drained a three to close the half, sending York to the locker room with a six point cushion.
The Bridges battled back in the second half, pulling to within one point on a Kramer jump shot, and then taking the lead 51-50 on the next possession when Allen converted a lay up. Dabo's third three-pointer of the game then put the Cardinals back on top. A Joelle Laurenceau (Midwood / Brooklyn, NY) basket at the 8:14 mark again cut the lead to one point at 60-59. The fourth trifecta by Dabo then began a 14-3 York rally that gave the Cardinals a comfortable lead at 74-62 with three minutes remaining.
BC would rally in the final minutes, as Cavalcante hit her fourth three-pointer of the day capping a 7-0 run that put the Bridges within five points going into the final minute. Despite misfiring on three of four fouls shots, the Cardinals were still able to hang on and secure the victory.
Cavalcante paced the Bridges, dropping 24 points and dishing out five assists. Allen added 13 points and four assists, while Sideris collected a season-high 15 boards to go along with seven points.
Dabo led the way for York with 22 points while knocking down 4 of 7 from three-point range. Dolores Maewether (Campus Magnet / Jamaica, NY) and Niya Jarvis (Talent Unlimited / Bronx, NY) each chipped in with 17 points.
BC will remain home on Monday evening as they battle non-conference foe Albertus Magnus at 7:00 pm.
