Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn Men (15-5) impressed their home crowd on Tuesday Night as they defeated SUNY New Paltz (6-11) by a final score of 84-75.
The game was a back and forth affair in the opening minutes, but the Bridges took the lead seven minutes into the first half as Daniel Nisbett (Petrides/Staten Island, NY) made a pair of baskets to key a 6-0 run. Back-to-back baskets by Reginald Posey (Msgr. Scanlon / Bronx, NY) pushed the BC lead to 11 points at 22-11 with eight minutes to play in the stanza. The lead would again swell to 11 as Thomas Guerin (St. Edmund Prep / Brooklyn, NY) mad a lay-up at the 6:04 mark. The Hawks, who shot 4 of 5 three pointers in the first period, used their marksmanship to trigger a 17-10 rally over the next the five minutes, pulling to within two points at 36-34. A pair of foul shots by Corey McFarlane (Transit Tech / Brooklyn, NY) in the waning moments sent Brooklyn into the locker room with a four point cushion.
Richard Jean-Baptiste (St. John's Prep / Queens, NY) scored eight points during the 10-2 Brooklyn run that opened the second half, increasing the lead to 12 points 48-36. The Hawks battled back, and were as close as five points, 58-53 midway through the period. Brooklyn still had another rally left in them, as they scored 13 of the next 17 points, to command a 16 point edge 73-57 with just over four minutes to play. The Bridges were able to keep the lead to double figures until the last possession of the game, as they cruised to the non-conference victory.
Nisbett was on fire, as he converted on 5 of 9 from beyond the arc, to lead his team with 27 points. Jean-Baptiste added in 24 points and a game-high nine rebounds. McFarlane added 16 points, while Guerin contributed a season-high 10 assists.
New Paltz was led by Kyle Nelson (Kingston / Port Ewen, NY) who scored 19 points and grabbed 7 boards in the loss.
Brooklyn will head out on the road on Thursday as they battle borough rival St. Joseph's College at Bishop Loughlin High School. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
