BC Women Drop Second Half Lead, Fall To Hunter, 64-61

Box Score

Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College Women (5-7, 1-3 CUNYAC) led throughout much of Saturday's contest but could not hold on as they fell to Hunter (2-8, 2-2 CUNYAC) by a score of 64-61.

The game began slowly as each team missed five of their first six attempts from the floor, but the pace soon picked up.  The Hawks built an early 17-11 lead capped by an Andrea Buckham (Flushing / Jamaica, NY) lay-up with just over seven minutes remaining in the opening stanza.  The Bridges responded with a 19-4 run over the next six minutes to gain a 30-21 advantage. Senior guard Jaclyn Cavalcante (James Madison / Brooklyn, NY) scored 10 points for BC during this stretch.  Hunter converted three of four free throws in the final minute of the period, giving Brooklyn a 30-24 halftime lead.

The Bridges maintained the lead for much of the second half.  Another lay-up by Buckham pulled the Hawks to within four points, at 38-34 with over 13 minutes remaining.  A Christina McDonnell (Staten Island Tech / Staten Island, NY) three-point play punctuated a 10-3 Brooklyn spurt over the next four minutes, giving BC a 10 point cushion that would prove to be insufficient.

A Michelle Gatti (Christ the King / Brooklyn, NY) jumper pulled the Hawks to within one at 52-51 with over three minutes left to play.  A BC missed three-pointer was followed by free throws from Buckham which put Hunter up by one. Shay Branch-El Vielot (Canarsie / Cambria Heights, NY) then hit a jumper to give the visitors a three-point lead.  Cavalcante hit back-to-back foul shots on the next Brooklyn possession to pull the Bridges to within one, 55-54 with a little more than two minutes to play.  The Bridges would get no closer, as Buckham and Branch-El Vielot combined to go five for six from the charity stripe in the final moments of the game.

Cavalcante led the way for BC as she scored a season-high 25 points while also recording a team-high four steals.  Joellle Laurenceau (Midwood / Brooklyn, NY) finished just shy of a double-double pouring in nine points and grabbing nine rebounds. Amber Gordon (Bishop Loughlin/Brooklyn, NY) chipped in with 10 points off the bench.

Hunter was led by  Buckham  who scored 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Branch-El Vielot chipped in with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Brooklyn will remain at home as they battle non-conference opponent Pine Manor on Monday at 7 pm.
