Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Soccer Team (5-7, 3-2-2 CUNYAC) earned an important conference victory on Saturday afternoon, defeating City College of New York (4-11, 3-4 CUNYAC) by a score of 3-2. The Bridges, who prior to the game honored their seven graduation seniors, won for the first time in four games.
Senior Vasilios "Billy" Mantagas (James Madison / Brooklyn, NY) scored a pair of goals within a seven minute stretch late in the first half, powering BC to a 2-0 halftime edge. Mantagas opened the scoring in game's 37th minute, putting a ball mishandled by CCNY keeper Taiwo Alabi into the center of the net. Then, in the 44th minute, Mantagas won a loose ball near the top of the penalty box and dribbled left past a defender, drilling the goal from just five yards out.
Midway through the second half, as Mantagas narrowly missed the hat trick, as his try from the left flank hit off the post and caromed to the middle of the box. Brooklyn's Vasyl Palinchak (James Madison / Brooklyn, NY) was there and kicked the ball into the center of the net for a 3-0 advantage.
CCNY would not go quietly, scoring a pair of late goals to keep the pressure on. In the 72nd minute, Mohammad Abdalhaleem (The British School / New York, NY) drilled a corner kick from Peter Viamontie (DeWitt Clinton / Bronx, NY) past Brooklyn keeper Mike Conway (Xaverian / Brooklyn, NY), who finished the game with nine saves. Minutes later, Viamontie added a goal of his own, to set the score at 3-2.
The Bridges play next on Wednesday afternoon at the College of Staten Island. The 4:00 pm conference tilt is the last regular season game on Brooklyn's schedule.
