Brooklyn, NY---The BC Women could not hold on to a lead that got as high as nine points in the second half as they fell to St. Joseph's on Monday night, 68-63.
St. Joseph's came out strong, racing out to an 11-2 lead in the game's first three minutes. Christina McDonnell (Staten Island Tech / Staten Island, NY) followed that by scoring seven straight points, highlighting a 12-2 BC run that put the Bridges on top by a score of 14-13. An Amber Gordon (Bishop Loughlin / Brooklyn, NY) lay-up at the 6:20 mark increased the Brooklyn lead to seven points, 32-25. Brooklyn maintained the lead as the period ended, going into the break up six points, 35-29.
In the second half, BC pushed the lead to nine points, as Jaclyn Cavalcante (James Madison / Brooklyn, NY) drained a three-pointer at the 18:26 mark. The lead would again swell to nine points when Cavalcante dialed in from long distance six minutes later. St. Joseph's then started a 10-2 run that brought them to within one point, 51-50 with eight minutes reamaining in the game. The teams traded baskets over the next four and a half minutes, with the Bears pulling to within one point on two more occassions.
St. Joseph's was able to take the lead at the 3:15 mark when Allison Cavanaugh converted a lay-up. That basket was part of a 12-0 rally by the home team that saw their lead stand at nine points, 66-57 with less than one minute to play. McDonnell hit a pair of threes in the next 30 seconds, the second of which put the Bridges within four points at 67-63. Forced to foul, BC did not get another field goal opportunity in the game.
McDonnell led the Bridges, scoring 27 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Cavalcante chipped in with 11 points and three assists. Both Gordon and Amalea Sideris (St. Demetrios / Astoria, NY) added 10 points in defeat.
Annamaria Ciorciari (Archbishop Molloy / Queens, NY) led St. Joe's with 21 points.
Brooklyn will return home on Wednesday to host Medgar Evers in a CUNYAC game at 5:30 pm.
