Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Basketball Team (14-5, 6-2 CUNYAC) forced 26 turnovers en route to a 77-69 triumph over Bard College (3-14, 1-9 Skyline). The victory came on a night where the BC Athletics Department honored the "Favorite Teachers" of the 2007-08 Academic Year during the Faculty Appreciation Day Festivities.
The opening seven minutes of the game were a back-and-forth affair, with the Raptors and Bridges trading the advantage five times in that span. A pair of foul shots by
Amber Gordon (Bishop Loughlin / Brooklyn, NY) put Brooklyn ahead to stay. An
Amalea Sideris (St. Demetrios / Astoria, NY) lay-up with four minutes remaining in the period stretched the Brooklyn lead to eight points, 34-26. At the intermission, BC had a six point cushion.
The second stanza began with a 12-5 Bridges run, punctuated by a
Priscilla Ramirez (Franklin D. Roosevelt / Brooklyn, NY) jumper that stretched the margin to 13 points. Bard answered with a 15-2 rally of their own to pull to within three points, 55-52 midway through the period. Blaire Moldenhauer (Albany / Albany, MO) scored nine points during the streak.
The Bridges clamped down on the defensive end and forced three consecutive turnovers, converting the extra chances into six points, the final two coming on a jumper from
Christina Belfiore (Staten Island Tech / Staten Island, NY). The Raptors raced back, using a pair of free throws from Moldenhauer to cut the gap to 69-67 with two minutes left in regulation.
Freshman center
Justine O'Callahan (Floral Park / Floral Park, NY) followed with a lay-up to extend the margin to four points. Gordon then forced a turnover near midcourt and converted on an easy jumper. BC was 4-of-6 from the charity stripe in the final 46 seconds to secure the victory.
Belfiore led the Bridges with 18 points, shooting 6-of-9 from the floor. O'Callahan recorded a double-double, notching 14 points and 13 boards, while Ramirez added 16 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Moldenhauer scored 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Bard in defeat.
Brooklyn continues their season on Saturday afternoon, taking on CUNYAC rival Lehman College at 12:30 pm. The game will be played at Brooklyn's Roosevelt Gymnasium.
