Kean Box Score

Facing stiff competition, the Women's Volleyball team (3-9) lost three matches this past weekend at the Kean Tournament in Union, NJ. Following a sweep by host Kean (10-5) in which BC was defeated 25-9, 25-11 and 25-11, the Bridges fought back in their next match but lost in five to Farmingdale State, 25-14, 20-25, 23-25, 25-18 and 15-12. In the final match, the Bridges lost a tough three set match against CUNYAC rival Lehman, 25-10, 25-21 and 25-21.

“Our strength was our defense and it kept us competitive in all the matches,” said Head Coach Joanne Riggs following the tough weekend. “However our offense was too inconsistent to close the door on our opponents.”

The day began with a difficult task in the form of Kean University. The Cougars took control of the match early and never let go, winning the first set 25-9 before winning the next two 25-11 and 25-11. Jamie Sacco (Park Ridge / Park Ridge, NJ) tallied eleven kills against zero hitting errors; the Cougars would commit just three hitting miscues the entire match and hit for a 46.3 percentage.

Brooklyn College shook off the loss and did battle with Farmingdale State (4-10), culminating a heart-breaking five set loss. After being dominated in the first set 25-14, the Bridges rebounded to take the next two, 25-20 and 25-23 as the offense came alive. However, the Rams recovered and took the final two sets 25-18 and 15-12. Daphne Brunet (Willi-Graf / Brooklyn, NY) led the Bridges with eight kills, while Gabrielle Rodriguez (Nazareth / Brooklyn, NY) notched seven of her own. Setter Lisenia (New Utrecht / Brooklyn, NY) Rodriguez recorded 26 assists and eight digs, while freshman Annalisa Carbonaro (New Utrecht / Brooklyn, NY) tallied seven digs in the contest.

The Bridges ended the day with a non-conference match against Lehman (6-7), and for the second time this season, the Lightning swept the Bridges. Again, BC got off to a slow start, dropping the first set 25-10 before putting up more offense in the second and third. Lehman's Gerri-Ann Martin (JFK / Bronx, NY) had fourteen kills in the match, as the Lightning took the final two sets 25-11, 25-11. Brunet recorded seven kills while Carbonaro contributed another six digs.

Brooklyn College returns to action at home this Tuesday, October 6th at 7:00 pm against Purchase College for Senior Night.
