New York, NY---The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball Team (23-5) accomplished what no other could since 1973 as they defeated Baruch, 89-69, to claim the 44th Annual CUNYAC / Con Edison Basketball Championship.
Richard Jean-Baptiste (St. John's Prep / Queens, NY), who was named Tournament Most Valuable player, was held scoreless in the first half, however, he responded with 23 second half points to lead his team to victory.
Down by 3 points, 61-58, with 9:19 to go in the game, baskets by
Ahmad Hemingway (Curtis / Brooklyn, NY) and
Tyshawn Russell (Holy Cross / Jamaica, NY) put BC back on top and spurred a 31-8 run to close the game and give Brooklyn their first championship in over 35 years.
Head coach
Steve Podias, who claimed his first CUNYAC title, was enthusiastic with the win, calling this "The best team that I have coached at any level."
