Newark, NJ --- The Brooklyn College Women's Volleyball team (11-7) topped the Eagles of Green Mountain College (6-14) in straight sets, 3-0 (25-10, 25-13, 25-23), in its first game of the Rutgers-Newark tri-match, before falling to host Rutgers-Newark (8-14) in an action packed four-set match, 3-1 (28-26, 25-21, 19-25, 25-19) in the nightcap.
In their opening game victory, the Bulldogs were led by freshman setter Amanda Fiore (Staten Island, NY/Susan E. Wagner), who helped set the offense with a game-high 19 assists, to go along with five service aces. Sophomore Lisenia Rodriguez (Brooklyn, NY/New Utrecht) also chipped in with five aces, as Brooklyn would finish the game with 15 total service aces for the match. Freshman Maritza Morency (Port-au-Prince, Haiti/Nouveau College Bird) and junior Colette Dragon (Spring Valley, NY/Spring Valley) recorded seven kills apiece, while freshman Jillian Escobar (Queens Village, NY/Francis Lewis) finished with 10 digs.
Fiore continued her solid play on the day in game two against the Scarlet Raiders recording a double-double with a game-best 33 assists, to go along with 16 digs. Junior captain Caitlin McMullen (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) and classmate Dragon each totaled nine kills, while senior Noelle Benson (Ontario, CA/Ontario) chipped in with 18 digs.
The Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday, October 19th, when Brooklyn will host the Lightning of Lehman College in a crucial CUNY Athletic Conference match to determine top-four seeding in the upcoming CUNYAC tournament. The match is set to begin at 7:00 pm at the West Quad Center Gymnasium.
