Women’s Swimming Drops Season Opener to Baruch, 98-65

New York, NY --- Following a six-year hiatus, the Brooklyn College Women's Swimming & Diving team made its 2010-2011 debut earlier tonight against the reigning CUNYAC champion Bearcats of Baruch College at the ARC Aquatic Center. The Bulldogs dropped their season opening meet 98-65 to fall to 0-1 on the year; while the Bearcats improve to 2-1 overall on the year, 2-0 in the conference.

The highlight of the meet came from Catherine Chan (Flushing, NY/Townsend Harris) who took home a first place finish in the 100 Breaststroke. “Catherine is talented and works hard,” said Head Coach Jillian Wyrick. “I'm so excited she won Brooklyn College's first event!”

Chan also performed well in the 200 Medley Relay along with teammates Megan Pendergast (Warwick, NY/Warwick), Velentina Monroy (Brooklyn, NY/Edward R. Murrow) and Marisa Paolillo (Brooklyn, NY/Leon M. Goldstein), as the quartet used a strong start to take home a second place finish.

“We hung with conference champs Baruch for most of the race and demonstrated that our women have some speed,” said Wyrick.

The Bulldogs are back in action this Tuesday, November 16th, when Brooklyn will play host to the Lightning of Lehman College in a CUNYAC meet. The start time for the first ever swimming and diving meet at the West Quad Center Natatorium is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
