Bronx, NY --- The fifth seeded Brooklyn College Women's Volleyball team dropped their quarterfinal match of the 2010 CUNY Athletic Conference/Emblem Health Women's Volleyball Championships to the fourth seeded Lehman College Lightning by a score of 3-1 (14-25, 14-25, 25-19, 20-25) tonight at the APEX on the campus of Lehman College in the Bronx, NY.
The Lighting will advance to the semifinals on Friday, November 5th, where they will take on the top seeded Hawks of Hunter College, who defeated the eighth seeded College of Staten Island in their quarterfinal match.
Lehman came out strong to open the match taking the first set, 25-14. Trailing 9-8, the host Lightning rattled off nine straight points to take a commanding 17-9 lead and the eventual opening set victory. Lehman totaled 15 kills, while committing just two errors for a .481 hitting percentage.
The second set featured much of the same, as Lehman cruised to a second straight 25-14 victory. The Lightning took the first four points of the set and never trailed as Lehman continued its strong hitting with 10 kills, while committing three errors for a .350 hitting percentage. The Lightning were also aided by seven Brooklyn attack errors in the set.
Down 2-0, the Bulldogs would not go down without a fight as Brooklyn would take the third set, 25-19, forcing a fourth set. Holding a slim 20-19 lead, the Bulldogs rolled off five straight points to take the set. After solid hitting in the first two sets, Lehman committed 11 attack errors to assist in the Brooklyn win.
The Lightning would end any type of comeback attempt by Brooklyn as Lehman would take the fourth set, 25-20, for the match win. Trailing 13-12, the Lightning went on a roll taking seven straight points to go ahead 19-13. Lehman would never trail again; as the hosts would eventually go on to take the three sets to one victory. Brooklyn committed seven attack errors in the set to aid in the Lehman win.
Freshman
Jillian Escobar (Queens Village, NY/Francis Lewis) totaled a team-high nine kills on the night for Brooklyn, to go along with a game-best 17 digs. Classmate
Maritza Morency (Port-au-Prince, Haiti/Nouveau College Bird) and junior captain
Caitlin McMullen (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) each tallied five kills, while Morency also chipped in with 12 digs. Freshman
Amanda Fiore (Staten Island, NY/Susan E. Wagner) helped set up the offense with 22 assists, while also recording five service aces.
For Lehman, Gerri-Ann Martin posted a game-high 17 kills, while Vanessa Brown chipped in with 14 kills. Lisa Jagdeo dished out a game-best 33 assists, to go along with 14 digs for the double-double. Jennifer Winkler and Besa Zabelaj provided solid defense finishing the night with 14 and 12 digs, respectively.

Joanne Riggs. "All in all we had a great season that was led by our freshman. We look forward to working with them in the future and having them lay the foundation for a BC Women's Volleyball powerhouse."
The Bulldogs end their season with an 11-12 overall record, marking a seven-win improvement from a year ago. 2011 will look to be another solid season, as Brooklyn will return nine of their 12 players from this year's young squad, as seniors

Noelle Benson (Ontario, CA/Ontario) will be gone due to graduation.
