Jamaica, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Volleyball team posted a pair of wins over borough rivals in today's CUNYAC Tri-Match at York College. In their opening game, the Bulldogs stung the Yellow Jackets of City Tech in straight sets 3-0 (25-8, 25-7, 25-3) and later tamed the Cougars of Medgar Evers College 3-1 (26-24, 19-25, 25-21, 25-19). Brooklyn improves to 3-0 on the young season and 2-0 in the CUNYAC.
Leading the way for the Bulldogs in the opener were a trio of freshmen in Amanda Fiore (Staten Island, NY/Susan E. Wagner), Jillian Escobar (Queens Village, NY/Francis Lewis) and Maritza Morency (Port-au-Prince, Haiti/Noureau College Bird). Fiore posted seven service aces, seven assists and two digs, while Escobar recorded six aces, four kills and a dig. Morency chipped in with five kills, to go along with three digs.
The Brooklyn veterans would help set the pace in the second game as captain junior Caitlin McMullen (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) posted seven kills and four digs; while senior Gabrielle Rodriguez (Brooklyn, NY/Nazareth) recorded six kills, two blocks and an ace and classmate Joan Wu (Long Island City, NY/Long Island City) finished with five aces.
Newcomer Colette Dragon (Spring Valley, NY/Spring Valley) had a solid game with eight kills, a block and a dig. Morency would continue her strong play in the nightcap with eight digs and six kills.
Head Coach Joanne Riggs on the CUNYAC Tri-Match sweep, "After coming off the high of a 3-0 win against City Tech, we got off to a slow start against Medgar. With the help of our veteran bench, we were able to bring the win home!"
Brooklyn returns to action this Tuesday, September 14th, when the Bulldogs will host the Bloodhounds of John Jay College at 7:00 pm. A pre-game tailgate will be held on the seventh floor of the Student Center prior to BC's 2010 home opener against John Jay from 5:00 pm – 6:45 pm.
