Panthers Sneak Past Bulldogs In Four, 25-17, 25-19, 24-26, 25-23

Box Score

Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College Women's Volleyball Team (5-2) showed a tremendous amount of courage on Thursday evening as they mounted numerous comebacks throughout their four-set match, however they were unable to earn the victory as they fell, 25-17, 25-19, 24-26, 25-23 to the College at Old Westbury (7-4).

The Panthers were able to control sets one and two from start to finish, as their notched 16 kills to BC's 11 over the opening two periods.

In set three, the Bulldogs came roaring back to take the set 26-24, putting away 12 kills in the process.  Jillian Escobar (Francis Lewis / Queens Village, NY) and Caitlin McMullen (Midwood / Brooklyn, NY) each had four kills in the set for Brooklyn, who forced a fourth set against the tough Old Westbury squad.

Set four would be another thriller, as BC took an early 11-7 lead before Old Westbury would take the next five points, and the 12-11 advantage.  After a side out tied the score at 12, the teams played evenly over the match's next few minutes, with an attack error by the Panther's Nancy Apollonio (Our Lady of Lourdes / Cold Spring, NY) evening the match at 21.

Following two straight Old Westbury points, a Gabrielle Rodriguez (Nazareth / Brooklyn, NY) kill and Joan Wu (Long Island City / Long Island City, NY) ace tied the score back up at 23.  The Bulldogs could not retake the lead, however, as the visiting Panthers took the following two points and the match.

McMullen led the team with 10 kills and hit for a .391 percentage, while Escobar put away 9 kills in the loss.  Electra Telesford (Abraham Lincoln / Brooklyn, NY) had one of the best games of her BC career with 6 kills on 14 attempts.

"It was a good match," said McMullen, the team's lone veteran starter.  "I thought we started slow but we played very well in the final two sets."

McMullen and her teammates will head to Montclair, New Jersey on Saturday for the Montclair State Trimatch where they will face NYU-Poly and the host team, Montclair State University.  Check www.brooklyncollegeathletics.com for updates throughout the weekend.
