Montclair, NJ --- The Brooklyn College Women's Volleyball team (6-3) dropped its opening match at the Montclair State University tri-match, 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-14), to NYU-Polytechnic, before downing host Montclair in a five-set thriller, 3-2 (16-25, 25-23, 25-23, 20-25, 16-14) at the Panzer Athletic Center.
Junior captain
Caitlin McMullen (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) led Brooklyn with a team-high nine kills in the opening loss to NYU-Poly, while freshman setter
Amanda Fiore (Staten Island, NY/Susan E. Wagner) continued her solid play setting up the offense with 15 assists.
Meredith Shipman led the Blue Jays with a match-high 15 kills and nine digs, while Corey Loupee recorded a match-best 20 assists. Victoria Kalvert chipped in with six service aces.
The Bulldogs would not have time to linger over their loss, as they had another game to focus on. After dropping the opening set to Montclair State, 25-16, Brooklyn took consecutive 25-23 victories in both the second and third sets to take a 2-1 match advantage. The host Red Hawks would show their resiliency coming back to take the fourth set 25-20, forcing a decisive fifth set. In the end, Brooklyn would not be denied the victory, taking the see-saw fifth set and match, 16-14.
Brooklyn used a balanced offensive attack in its victory over Montclair, as freshmen
Maritza Morency (Port-au-Prince, Haiti/Nouveau College Bird) and
Jillian Escobar (Queens Village, NY/Francis Lewis) and junior
Colette Dragon (Spring Valley, NY/Spring Valley) each posted 13 kills apiece, match-highs. Morency and Escobar would finish the match with double-doubles, chipping in with 19 and 20 digs, respectively. Fiore once again paced the offense with a match-best 46 assists, to go with a team-high 23 digs for the double-double. Sophomores
Kathy Chu (Queens, NY/Bayside) and
Lisenia Rodriguez (Brooklyn, NY/New Utrecht) were both solid on the defensive side of the ball contributing with 12 and 11 digs, respectively.
Montclair was led by Alyssa Batiste's triple-double, with 11 kills, 22 assists and 12 digs. Bella Milstein finished with 20 assists and 14 digs, while Kristen Bronowich chipped in with 10 kills and 10 digs. Kaitlyn Irwin posted a match-high 42 digs, to go along with seven aces.
The Bulldogs will be back in action this Tuesday, September 28th, when Brooklyn will play host to the Hawks of Hunter College in a CUNY Athletic Conference match at the West Quad Center. The match is slated to begin at 6:00 pm.
