Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College Women's Volleyball Team (6-4, 3-2 CUNYAC) dropped their second conference match of the season on Tuesday evening as they fell in three sets to first place Hunter College, 25-14, 25-17, 25-19.
The Bulldogs showed lots of energy to start the match as they played the Hawks even to an 8-8 score, however Hunter would 11 of the match's next 14 points to take a 20-11 lead. The Hawks would go on to win the set by 11 while putting away 12 kills and notching a .500 hitting percentage.
Hunter jumped out to a huge 12-4 lead in the second set as Kim Hirten (St. John the Baptiste / Lindenhurst, NY) led the team early with a kill and two service aces. From that point on, Brooklyn played the Hawks evenly, but they could not get past the opening hurdle. Each team finished with 8 team kills in the set.
BC opened the third set on fire, jumping out to an 8-4 lead, while getting kills from
Jillian Escobar (Francis Lewis / Queens Village, NY),
Gabrielle Rodriguez (Nazareth / Brooklyn, NY),
Maritza Morencey (Noveau College Bird / Port-au-Prince, Haiti) and
Caitlin McMullen (Midwood / Brooklyn, NY).
The Bulldogs were unable to sustain the momentum as Hunter fought back to tie the match at nine and then scored the following three points to take a 12-9 lead that they would not relinquish.
Mallory Grubler (Cardozo / Bayside, NY), the reigning CUNYAC Player of the Week, led the Hawks with 11 kills,, while Hirten finished with 6 kills and 5 aces.
McMullen led Brooklyn with 8 kills while Morency chipped in with 7 of her own. Reigning CUNYAC Rookie of the Week
Amanda Fiore (Susan E. Wagner / Staten Island, NY) dished out 19 assists but was shutout of the ace column for the first time this season.
Brooklyn will be on the road for their next four matches beginning with Saturday's tri-match at Bard College.
