Brooklyn Tops CSI 6-3, Clinches Top Seed In Upcoming CUNYAC Championship

Box Score

Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College Women's Tennis Team continued their outstanding season on Tuesday evening as they defeated Staten Island 6-3, clinching the #1 seed in the upcoming CUNYAC Championship.  With the win, the Bulldogs improve to a perfect 7-0 in the conference, while improving to 10-2 overall.  The Dolphins drop to 6-7 and 5-3 in league play.

Brooklyn began the match in impressive fashion as they swept the three doubles matches.  Yuliya Orkis and Lianna Rivkin were impressive at the #1 flight, defeating CSI's Ilona Stoyko and Jean Baak 8-1.  Janice Shen and Gianna Gelosi were big winners at #3 doubles as well, cruising by Katie Masterson and Sophia Varriano 8-3.

In the most competitive match of the three, Maria Sanz and Norma Chabbott needed a tiebreaker to overtake the Dolphins duo of Alena Vedeneeva and Maryna Incherchera, 9-8 (7-4).

"II thought we did an outstanding job getting ahead early with the doubles matches," said Bulldog Head Coach Ahmad Odetalla.  That has been one of the main reasons why we have been successful all year and today was a classic example"

BC would wrap up the win early on in singles play as Orkis and Shen would cruise to straight set wins.  Orkis, who improved to a perfect 10-0 on the season, won 6-0, 6-0 over Vedeneeva, while Shen, who improved to 7-0 on the season, defeated Varriano, 6-1, 6-2.

Even though their fate was determined, Staten Island did not stop playing as Baak, Incherchera and Stoyko each claimed straight sets singles victories to bring the score to 5-3.  Gelosi and Masterson played the longest match of the evening with Gelosi pulling out a 6-4, 6-4 decision at the #6 flight.

Brooklyn will resume play on Thursday as they host the College of St. Elizabeth at 4 pm.  The Bulldogs will close out their conference schedule on Friday as they head to the Bronx to take on Lehman at 3:30 pm.
