Bronx, NY ---The Brooklyn College Women's Volleyball team lost a City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) contest earlier tonight, 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-17), to the Lightning of Lehman College at the APEX. With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 10-8 overall and 5-2 in the CUNYAC; while the Lightning improve to 11-7 overall and 5-2 in conference play.
The loss also snaps BC's four-match winning streak and drops the Bulldogs to fourth in the current CUNYAC standings.
Brooklyn was led by sophomore
Jillian Escobar who finished with a match-high 10 kills on the night. Classmate
Maritza Morency tallied seven kills and a match-best nine digs, while junior
Kathy Chu paced the offense with 20 assists, to go along with seven digs. Senior
Caitlin McMullen and sophomore
Samantha Babb each recorded three service aces in the match.
The host Lightning were led by Gerri-Ann Martin and Shari Quiles, who each posted eight kills for the match. Martin also registered a match-best seven service aces and six digs, while Quiles added a match-high nine digs. Jasmine Bermudez dished out a match-best 23 assists for the game.
The Bulldogs took an early 4-1 lead early in the first set, however, Lehman would chip away at their deficit and eventually tie the game at five apiece. Up by one, 8-7, the Lightning went on a 7-0 run to take control of the set, 15-7. Lehman would never look back as they took the opening set, 25-14.
Lehman took the momentum of their first set victory into the second set, as the Lightning jumped out to an early 12-2 advantage. Martin's serving helped spark the Lehman run, as she recorded five service aces. The Lightning would go on to take the set, 25-15.
The third set featured much of the same for Lehman, as the Lighting took an early 6-1 lead. The Bulldogs would not go down lightly, as Brooklyn chipped away at its deficit throughout the set. In the end, however, Lehman would take the set 25-17 for the eventual straight sets victory.
Brooklyn returns to action this Thursday, October 20th, as the Bulldogs will play host to the Panthers of Purchase College in a non-conference match at the West Quad Center at 7:00 pm. The game is also the regular season finale for BC, as seniors McMullen and
Iris Clopton-Robinson will be honored prior to the start of the match as part of Senior Day festivities.
