Women’s Tennis Advances to CUNYAC Championship Match

Box Score

Flushing, NY --- The #1 seeded Brooklyn College Women's Tennis team defeated the #4 seeded Dolphins of the College of Staten Island earlier today, in the Semifinals of the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC)/Hospital for Special Surgery Women's Tennis Championships held at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY, to advance to the championship final for the first time in program history.

In their semifinal matchup, the Bulldogs took an early 2-1 advantage over the Dolphins taking two of the three doubles flights.

For Brooklyn, the tandem of freshman Yuliya Orkis and sophomore Liana Rivkin defeated the duo of Aleena Vadeneeva and Sophia Varriano, 8-4, at number 1 doubles; while the pairing of senior Janice Shen and sophomore Gianna Gelosi took down the team of Demi-Jean Martorano and Maryna Incherchera, 8-3, at number 3 doubles.

CSI would edge out number 2 doubles, as Ilona Stoyko and Jean Baak got the best of sophomores Maria Sanz and Norma Lynn Chabbott, 8-6.

As the match turned over to singles play, Orkis and Shen continued their dominance from the regular season, as Orkis defeated Stoyko in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, at number 1 singles; while Shen picked up a key win at number 3 singles over Varriano, 6-2, 6-1, to give BC a comfortable 4-1 lead.

Needing just one more win to punch Brooklyn's ticket into the CUNYAC final, team captain Sanz came through in a big way, earning a hard fought win at number four singles against her opponent Baak, 7-5, 7-5.

Number 2, 5 and 6 singles flights would go unfinished.

The Bulldogs, who improve to 14-2 overall on the season, will take on the #2 seeded Hawks of Hunter College for the CUNYAC crown tomorrow, Saturday, October 22nd, at the National Tennis Center at 4:00 pm. Hunter defeated #3 seeded York College, 5-0, in the other semifinal match to advance to the final. The Hawks have won 11 straight CUNYAC Championship titles.

In its regular season matchup, Brooklyn defeated Hunter, 6-3, back on October 6th. The loss snapped the Hawks 103-match conference winning streak, which dated back to the 2000 season.
