Women’s Volleyball Falls at Baruch, 3-0

New York, NY ---The Brooklyn College Women's Volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-14, 25-9, 25-19) decision to the Bearcats of Baruch College in the Bulldogs' final City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) match of the regular season earlier tonight at the ARC Arena. With the loss, Brooklyn moves to an even 11-11 on the year and 5-3 in the CUNYAC; while Baruch improves to 19-8 overall on the season and 7-1 in league play.

The Bulldogs were led by sophomore outside hitter Maritza Morency who finished the night with team-highs in both kills and digs, with six kills and 10 digs. Classmate Jillian Escobar chipped in with five kills, four digs and two service aces. Junior setter Kathy Chu helped pace the offense with 18 assists, to go along with seven digs.

For Baruch, Jessica Wu totaled a match-high nine kills, while Posey Wilson registered a match-best 14 digs. Melinda Santiago dished out 21 assists as the Bearcats posted a .338 (35 kills/9 errors /77 total attacks) hitting percentage for the match.

The Bearcats led the opening set from the first serve scoring the first three points of the set. Up by one, 7-6, Baruch rattled off six straight points to take a 13-6 lead and forcing a Brooklyn timeout. The host Bearcats would go on to take a 25-14 victory, posting a strong hitting percentage of .360 (11 kills/2 errors/25 total attacks) in set.

The second set featured much of the same, as Baruch jumped out to a 12-2 lead and never looked back, cruising to a 25-9 win. The Bearcats continued their solid hitting recording a .423 (12 kills/1 error/26 total attacks) hitting percentage in the set.

Trailing 8-6 in the third set, Brooklyn scored three straight points to take a slim 9-8 advantage. The lead would not last long however, as Baruch answered back with an 8-0 run to go up 16-9. The Bearcats would eventually go on to take the 25-19 win for the straight sets victory.

Brooklyn will return to action this Saturday, October 29th, as the Bulldogs will travel to Old Westbury, NY to take part in the College of Old Westbury Tri-Match. BC will take on the host Panthers at 11:00 am, before taking on Mount Saint Mary College at 1:00 pm.

The Bulldogs will also be the #4 seed in the upcoming CUNYAC Women's Volleyball Championships and thus host their quarterfinals round match on Tuesday, November 1st at 7:00 pm in the West Quad Center.
