Bulldogs Comeback Effort Propels Team To Semifinals With 3-1 Win Over Beavers

Box Score

Brooklyn, NY---The #4 seeded Brooklyn College Bulldogs advanced to the Semifinal Round of the 2011 CUNYAC / Con Edison Women's Volleyball Championship on Tuesday evening as they defeated the #5 seed, CCNY, 23-25, 25-15, 25-17, 25-22 in front of their home crowd at West Quad.

The win marked the team's first in CUNYAC Championship play and their first trip the the CUNYAC Semifinals.

BC did not start the match quite the way they wanted to as the Beavers jumped out to a 15-12 lead behind three kills from their star, Zuleyka Polanco.  Brooklyn would tie the score at 17, 18, 21, 22 and 23, but could not regain the lead.  CCNY would then claim the final two points of the set to take a one-set advantage.

Brooklyn looked like an entirely new team in set two as they never trailed CCNY, cruising to a 25-15 victory, keyed by four kills a piece from sophomore hitters Jillian Escobar and Maritza Morency

Brooklyn's dominance continued into the third set as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 9-0 lead as Escobar served up all nine points, including four aces.

City fought back Valiantly to cut the deficit to 17-11, but that is as close as they would get as the Bulldogs put the set away to go up two sets to one.

The fourth set saw both teams come out scrapping as the score would be tied at 10 early on.  The score would remain close as no team would go up by more than two as the teams battled to a score of 22 all.  Brooklyn would take the next three points, claiming the four-set win and advancing to the Semifinal to face #1 seeded Hunter College.

"I am so proud of every member of this team," said Head Coach Joanne Riggs. "Our fans were the 7th player on the court tonight.  They were loud and kept our team fighting hard til the end."

Brooklyn's next match, along with the other semifinal and final, will take place on Thursday at CCNY.  2 Seeded Baruch will take on 3 Lehman at 4:00 pm, while #4 Brooklyn will take the court against the top seeded Hunter at 6:00 pm.  The final will follow at 8:00 pm.
