Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Soccer team dropped its 2011 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) opener to the College of Staten Island earlier today at Kingsborough CC field by a score of 3-2. The Bulldogs are now 0-2 overall on the season and 0-1 in the CUNYAC; while the Dolphins improve to 1-2-1 overall on the year and 1-0 in league play.
CSI would strike first in the 15th minute, as Kenneth Zaw floated a high arching shot that just went over the reach of the jumping goalkeeper to put the visiting Dolphins up 1-0 early in the ballgame.
The Bulldogs would answer rather quickly, as freshman
Dedou Toure found the back of the net for the equalizer in the 18th minute on a cross from teammates freshman
Reza Malek and senior
Igor Kozlov. Toure would strike again later in the game with his second goal of the night, as he once again blasted a shot past the keeper on a free kick from junior
Steven Favaloro in the 28th minute, giving Brooklyn a 2-1 advantage.
BC would maintain its 2-1 lead heading into the halftime break.
The Dolphins would come out of the intermission determined to take home the victory, as CSI pushed much of the tempo in the second half. Leading the way for Staten Island was Dogan Altunsoy who recorded the game-tying, as well as eventual game-winning goals.
Early in the second period, Altunsoy tied the game at 2-2 as he beat the goalie one-on-one on a breakaway opportunity. He would later take advantage of a rebound opportunity on a shot that rattle off the cross bar, which he sent past a diving keeper, to put the Dolphins up 3-2.
For CSI, Ahmed El-Ghareib played all 90 minutes in goal tallying 10 saves on the day, while
Stamatis Boundouris registered seven saves for the game for BC playing all 90 minutes as well.
“We're very disappointed with the result after going into the half with the lead and control of the game,” said head coach
Rawle Hensford. “However, we were not able to minimize our mistakes and capitalize on our many opportunities. We will look to go back to the drawing board and make the necessary adjustments.”
Brooklyn returns to the pitch this Saturday, September 17th, as the Bulldogs will travel to Madison, NJ to take on Fairleigh Dickinson - College at Florham in a non-conference match. Start time is slated for 1:00 pm.
