Women’s Volleyball Goes 1-3 at Jay Street Challenge

Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Volleyball team posted a 1-3 record at the Jay Street Challenge, hosted by Polytechnic Institute of New York University, this past Friday and Saturday, September 16th and 17th, as the Bulldogs move to an even 4-4 record on the season.

On Friday, the Bulldogs lost their first game to host NYU-Poly in straight sets, 3-0 (25-9, 25-11, 25-13), and later dropped their second game of the day to Montclair State University, also in straight sets, 3-0 (25-11, 25-19, 25-17). The losses snapped Brooklyn's three-game winning streak.

BC was led by its tri-captains in the opener, as sophomores Jillian Escobar and Maritza Morency totaled nine kills and nine digs, respectively; while senior Caitlin McMullen added three kills.

In the nightcap, Morency and Escobar recorded nine kills and five kills, respectively.

On day two, Brooklyn dropped its first game of the day to the Rams of Farmingdale State University in a tough four-set match by a score of 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-21). The Bulldogs would salvage their final game of the weekend, as BC posted a straight set win over the Cardinals of York College, 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-14).

Against the Rams, the Bulldogs were led by junior Kathy Chu's 32 assists and Escobar's 12 kills, 13 digs and two aces. Morency chipped in with nine kills and 20 digs, while McMullen added six kills.

In their final match, BC was led to victory by Escobar's nine kills and three aces and Chu's 23 assists and three aces. McMullen finished with six kills and six aces.

For her efforts, Escobar was voted to the All-Tournament team.

Host NYU-Poly won its challenge posting a perfect 4-0 record, while Farmingdale came in second place with a 3-1 mark. Montclair State followed with a third place finish going an even 2-2, while Brooklyn recorded a fourth place finish going 1-3. York rounded out the field coming in fifth place (0-4).

Brooklyn returns to action on Tuesday, September 20th, as the Bulldogs will take on the Beavers of the City College of New York (CCNY) in a key City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) matchup. Game time is scheduled for a 6:00 pm start.
